Community Involvement
Annual Toy Drive
According to the U.S. Census, more than 24.6% of children in Texas live in poverty. The number is even higher among Hispanic (33%) and Black (32%) children. According to child development experts, play is critically important to a child’s healthy development. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, emotional/physical strength in addition to improving their cognitive, language, problem solving, and social skills. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Play can be viewed as the work of a child and as such, toys can be looked at as their tools. Unfortunately, gifts are a low priority to family struggling to survive. Recognizing how critical this is to a child’s development and to put smiles on the faces of many children who might not receive gifts otherwise, we instituted our Annual Toy Drive in 2015. In our introductory year, we worked with the Lone Star Veterans Association, A Mothers' Sanctuary, Spring Woods Baptist Church, and Pathways to Hope Program for Women Veterans to reach Houston area families. Each year since, we have worked to identify organizations we can worth with in support of their youth.
